How many of you know about the Wears Valley connection to the Gatlinburg Farmers Market? There are many! Glo (yours truly) the volunteer manager lives in Dogwood Farmers and grows all natural herbs and veggies in whiskey barrels. Karen, our volunteer treasurer, also does more than expected each Saturday. She lives almost to Starkey Town. Lisa and Tim Line grow natural veggies, apples, berries and bees. at their beautiful old farm house in the valley. The Myers’ Brother twins grow multiple crops on their grandfathers property and sell from there during the week. Ernie and Ella produce marvelous jam and jellies from Walden Creek just off Wears Valley Rd. Come meet all our marvelous friends tomorrow.

Hope you and your family had a great Independence Day Celebration. We would like to thank our community for the great market last week. We had 17 vendors and well over 300 happy shoppers. This is the best market since covid started.
In addition last Saturday’s weather was beyond perfect. We even were able to close up quickly so the parking lot could be used for float building. Gatlinburg’s first in the nation parade got off at 12:01 and it was outstanding and the crowd loved it. We could not of done it without you. Many thanks and blessings.

Did you know that the Gatlinburg Farmers Market is handicap friendly? There is a ramp to the bathrooms, large doors and a hand rail. The market is on pavement (it does have a slight slant) be careful. We have a handicap parking space and the ability to drop off and pick up.

We would like to highlight one of our vendors. Barbara Schweiwe has been a vendor for many years. She loves the friendliness of the market because she can scooter around and visit all the other vendors. Barbara has multiple sclerosis (MS) and has been wheel chair bound for awhile. If you meet her you will quickly see that her personality has no bounds. Her Doctor told her to keep her hands busy to maintain flexibility. Her hand therapy encouraged her crafting everything colorful. She hand paints tile,  makes bags, decorations and fun kids’ items, even Covid-19 masks. These are all hand stitched. You should see her hand paint firefly jars, they even light up without fireflies. Barb’s dedicated husband Steve,  enjoys baking bread and muffins. Steve sometimes sells eggs and apples. He even found out how hard it is to grow sweet corn in a small plot.

Come on by and visit with Steve and Barbara.

Manager Notes 5/29/2020
Our opening day went perfect. I wrote this letter to the local paper.

Everybody Wore A Mask

The Gatlinburg Farmers Market opened on Sat. 5/23. Since we are on city property, we promised we would follow recommendations for masks, social distancing, hand sanitizers and one way flow through the market.

We had received a bit of negativity about recommending masks, I was a bit worried there could be problems. 99% were happy that we were requiring them. Many local shoppers have kept themselves at home and even out of the grocery stores. They welcomed an outside area with rules where they could give 6 ft. hugs, see and visit friends again and buy fresh all natural vegetables.

Parents with 2 young girls stopped by, all wearing masks except the youngest who was about 5 years old. When she learned we were requiring masks she started crying. Mom, walked in and purchased a child sized mask from one of our crafters ( whose husband was selling home made bread). The little girl was beaming, as she now had a mask like her sister.

A couple, who are regular customers came by with a golden-doodle and a dachshund. I looked at their masks. To my surprise! The had the dog faces on their masks. Wish I had asked them where the got them. Our opening market was the best ever! Eight veggie and baked good vendors sold out by 11:30. We should have at least three more vendors this Saturday, 5/30, 8:30 til noon.

We will continue to stand our ground, recommending masks. The Gatlinburg Farmers Market will continue to protect our vendors and immune compromised shoppers. We are now thinking about a most creative mask contest.
We will have the same edibles as last week with carrots added and someone will surprise me with an addition.
Read below for a complete list.

  • .Local Choices for Healthy Mountain Living

It is with great enthusiasm that we present the Gatlinburg Farmers Market. We are residents of Sevier and Cocke Counties. Specifically Gatlinburg and surrounding towns, including Pigeon Forge and Sevierville who are focused on healthy food, lifestyle, technology, and major event productions throughout our careers. We all selected the Great Smoky Mountains as our home because of the beauty and offerings of the area and the wonderful lifestyle it brings and has the capacity to bring to its residents. The Gatlinburg Farmers Market is a dream and a vision to provide our residents and visitors with fresh, local produce for fair pricing while supporting and stimulating the local economy
